Cultivating the coast differently.

Sea Meadow Tofino is exploring the controlled cultivation of Pacific sea asparagusSalicornia pacifica, a real Pacific-coast food with a documented coastal history. We aim to grow it consistently and measurably, rather than rely on wild harvest alone.

UNKNOWN Repeated-harvest productivity under controlled cultivation is a research question, not a result we have measured.

01 — A coastal food

A salty Pacific-coast vegetable with a real food identity

Salicornia pacifica (syn. Sarcocornia pacifica) is a perennial, salt-tolerant halophyte native to the Pacific coast. Its young, jointed shoots are eaten as a tender, salty culinary vegetable — often called sea asparagus, sea beans, or samphire.

On the plate it reads as a delicate green with a naturally saline, slightly mineral bite — closer to a coastal herb than to a leafy salad green. That distinctive salty identity is part of why it has a place on West Coast tables at all.

It is a halophyte: it grows where most crops cannot, in saline conditions, and published ecological evidence shows it resprouts repeatedly after clipping. FACT · SRC-0061 That regrowth behaviour is what makes repeatable cultivation a plausible question worth investigating.

02 — Nutrition worth measuring

Historical wild data exists — our own crop is what we intend to measure

A 1981 Alaska Native-foods analysis (Hooper) reports composition for wild S. pacifica per 100 g edible portion. We show it as historical wild-data context — not as Sea Meadow product nutrition.

STATUS Sea Meadow Tofino intends eventually to measure its own cultivated crop under Canadian food-labelling rules. We make no nutrient-content claim today.

03 — Food, people & coast

A documented coastal food — with different histories in different communities

Salicornia pacifica is not a new invention as food. Pacific-coast peoples have gathered and eaten it — but the record is specific, not uniform, and we present it carefully.

Tlingit — SE Alaska

Documented as a traditional food. Oral history and a 1981 Alaska Native-foods nutrient study record beach asparagus gathered and prepared by Tlingit communities. SRC-0165, SRC-0170

Coast Salish — Vancouver Island

Ethnobotany records Salicornia virginica (our species) as Coast Salish food — fleshy stems used for food. On our operating coast. SRC-0105

Haida — post-contact adoption

The leading ethnobotany source states Haida use as food was learned from Norwegian settlers and is "now widely used" — not an old-days tradition. SRC-0168, SRC-0169

CONTEXT Regional Pacific Northwest coastal peoples have eaten the perennial glasswort "since at least the 1880s" SRC-0170. We do not call it a historical staple food, and we do not imply a single pan-Indigenous tradition. Different communities have different, documented histories with this plant. Sea Meadow Tofino makes no claim to Indigenous knowledge and implies no endorsement by any Nation.

04 — What we're building

Controlled cultivation — the next chapter, not the invention of the plant

The plant already has a human-food identity. What is not yet established is whether it can be cultivated reliably and repeatably under controlled conditions. That is the gap Sea Meadow Tofino is investigating.

Consistent cultivation

Growing under managed saline conditions, rather than depending on wild harvest volumes that vary year to year.

Repeatable quality

Tender, uniform shoots — managing harvest timing so tips stay young and the plant keeps regrowing.

Measured food quality

Understanding what a cultivated crop actually contains — including its natural salt balance — instead of assuming.

05 — Why cultivation

Scientifically and commercially interesting — without overstating it

Controlled cultivation is compelling for practical reasons we can stand behind:

  • Quality — tender, consistent shoots by harvest timing
  • Traceability — known growing conditions, not unknown wild origin
  • Harvest consistency — less dependence on variable wild supply
  • Measurement — real composition data instead of assumption
  • Reducing wild reliance — cultivation as a complement to wild harvest
  • Saline land use — a crop for ground most agriculture cannot use

UNKNOWN These are the reasons we are investigating — framed as potential and aim, not proven outcomes. We make no environmental or climate claim we cannot source.

06 — Research & evidence

We separate what is known from what must be measured

Research is what makes the venture credible. We classify the evidence behind every claim so the difference between established knowledge and open question stays visible.

DIRECT Evidence on S. pacifica

Findings that specifically involve Salicornia pacifica — its native range, halophyte biology, clonal propagation, resprouting after clipping, and the documented coastal food history above. The strongest tier.

ANALOG Related species

Evidence from other Salicornia / Sarcocornia species, used only where clearly identified as analogy. It informs hypotheses but is not proof for this species.

UNKNOWN Requires measurement

Questions that need an experiment rather than an assumption — controlled-cultivation yield, optimal salinity, nutrient regime, and real production economics.

FACT No yield, price, or cost figure has been invented. Where the evidence does not exist, we say so. We do not publish proprietary protocol details; this site explains what we are investigating, not how we intend to optimize it.

Sea Meadow Tofino is interested in conversations with researchers and institutions working on questions related to saline cultivation and coastal crop science, including:

We are not naming specific institutions or researchers without their permission or an established affiliation. If the work overlaps with yours, we would welcome a conversation about the research question.

An early-stage coastal BC venture

Sea Meadow Tofino is an early-stage coastal British Columbia venture exploring controlled cultivation of Pacific sea asparagus (Salicornia pacifica).

We are at the investigative stage: building an evidence base, framing the repeated-harvest productivity question, and seeking research collaboration. We do not present the cultivation system as already proven, and we are not yet incorporated.
